That's a good observation. You're talking about supination, or rotating the forearms outward during a dumbbell curl. (You start with your palms facing each other.) This is a primary function of your biceps, and it leads to stronger contraction of the muscle.

 

An even better option is an offset curl. Place your thumbs against the outside head of each dumbbell instead of grasping the handles in the center. Then start the movement with your palms facing out, and perform the arm curl without allowing the inside head of the dumbbell to tilt down. This forces your biceps to work harder to keep your forearm supinated. The end result is a more effective arm workout.
