The 1-Mile Challenge
Since grade school, the mile run has served as a solid barometer for fitness. The reason: It demands endurance, power, and mental willpower, says Todd Durkin, C.S.C.S., author of musclemorphosis.com. And while it may not sound like much compared to, say, a marathon or even a 5K, only the fittest men can cover the distance quickly. See how you measure up with this week's fitness challenge: Run a mile as fast as possible.
Here's how it works: Go to a track or flat path the you know to be a mile, or hop on a treadmill and set the incline at 1 percent. Start your timer and go.
